Fox actually cancelled this product in 2003, as too many people were complained about it being controversial and tasteless. When they released the family guy dvd sets, they sold in the millions. Fox looked at the numbers, and realized they were leaving plenty of money on the table by now allowing this entertainment to hit the masses. So they jumped on board, and even funded the development of more family guy merchandise and advertising! Originally they had given seth mcfarlane $50,000 grand to create the pilot.
On a professional level, the family guy has been nominated for several emmy awards, golden reel nominations, and even the annie awards have nominated them. They won in all these categories, after bribing the judges with some cash. They were the first time a cartoon won an award since the flintstones.
